“A Hint of Borax”
Our minds make strange connections sometimes. This painting was of Death Valley. I got thinking about an episode of Death Valley Days I saw once about a miner who, instead of looking for gold, found Borax instead.
One of four similar, sequential landscapes where only the timeframe and never the landscapes change. I achieved this by painting sections back and forth with an inch and a half piece of the cardboard backing on my sketch pad.
“Crossing the Styx”
[This] is always portrayed darkly, as crossing the river into hell would certainly be, but I envisioned an electric sky charged with a foreboding, sulfured sky above.
